Exactly 6 years, 4 months, and 22 days ago, the Cerezo Contreras brothers, Héctor and Antonio were arrested at their home, tortured for 12 hours, and locked up in the Altiplano maximum security prison, CEFERESO No. 1. All this time, the Cerezo Committee of Mexico has worked for the freedom of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in the country. From the very first, we’ve pushed for the passage of an amnesty law, one mechanism among many that can be used by those prisoners who wish to do so to win their freedom. We repeat: amnesty is not the same thing as pardon.
With dignity and steadfastness, we have stood up against the repression that the State has used against us, which has taken the form of physical aggression, death threats, police persecution, surveillance, harassment by the news media (disinformation tending to set the stage for the physical elimination of the Committee), and diverse forms of political and social control.
We have been able to survive up until now thanks to the solidarity of different kinds of organizations and individuals, as well. We are well aware that we are not alone, that a people has sheltered us and struggled with and for us in a variety of ways, both organized and unorganized.
We believe that this year will be harsher than the last; all indications are that repression will increase. We call upon all organizations to search for ways and to make preparations to lessen the impact of the repression or hinder it. We urge everyone to denounce and document it so as not to allow a permanent state of impunity to exist.
We thank each and every one of you for your unconditional solidarity and hope that you will reach the goals you’ve set in order to contribute to overcoming this inhuman society that we live in.
